Praça do Comércio
The great riverside square, open to the Tagus on one side: the start and the finish, under the arch.
- About
- Rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake
- On race night
- The start village, the finish arch and the medals
The square was the royal palace’s courtyard until the earthquake and tsunami of 1755 swept the palace away. Pombal rebuilt it as a great open room facing the river, arcaded on three sides.
On race night the start village fills the eastern arcade: bag drop, the start pens and the finish arch, where the course comes home under the river breeze.
